I'd like to join a group ride, but I am not sure which rides will suit my skill level.

Each ride announcement will be designated a skill level out of five: Beginner, Intermediate, Intermediate/Advanced, Advanced, Epic/Long distance.

See our group ride guidelines for information on what all of this means.

I have never tried mountain biking before but I am sort of interested in trying it out. Will I be ok? Will my bike make it out in one piece?

Mountain biking is, on average, more physically demanding on both the rider and his/her bike. Off-road riding requires more focus on balance, bike control and attention to the nature of the terrain being ridden than your average paved-surface ride. As with almost anything you are just beginning to try out, you should take things easy and leisurely before progressing to more aggressive riding styles.

Will your bike be ok? Probably yes. You can fix a flat tire or a broken chain...right? :)

By the way, check out our "Events schedule" and look for a beginners' ride. Join the fun.

Where can I buy a good mountain bike in Egypt?

A bike that we would recommend is the Spinburn Speedmax sold by Elementxsports.com. It has a very nice frame and a solid XT/Deore groupset.

Unfortunately, at the time of this writing, there is a severe lack of good bike dealers in Egypt. There is a store in Heliopolis that shall not be named here that imports *some* quality bikes, but their bike knowledge and service is shameful.

A difficult but good option is import a bike from abroad, or get your hands on a good used bike or frame and rebuild it if necessary. If you have tips on this subject, please do make them known! (email us and we'll post them here, or post in the forum).

I found a bike for L.E. 300/500/700 and the guys at the bike shop say its "great for mountain biking". Should I buy it?

No. You will not find a quality mountain bike for less than L.E. 2000+. If you do not know what a "quality bike" is, read our
    article
    on the subject.

What do I bring along (besides my bike!) on an off-road ride?

A minimum kit should include: Tire pump and patch kit, spare tube, bike multi-tool or a set of allen keys, mini first aid kit, spare chain links and some food and water

See our article on preparing your basic ride kit for detailed information!

How much should I spend on a mountain bike?

As much as you can afford. A good bike will give you a better ride and more enjoyable trail time. The components will work better and last longer too. We recommend you invest no less that L.E. 2000 in a mountain bike.

Updated January 2010: Here is a quick (and very rough) guide based on current average prices (all prices in Egyptian Pounds):

    - Entry level hardtail: 1500-2500
    - Mid range hardtail: 3000-5000
    - High-end hardtail:5000+

    -Entry-level full-suspension: 3000-4500
    - Mid-range full-suspension: 5000-8000
    - High-end full suspension: 8000+

Can you recommend a good bike to buy in Egypt?

Given the limited variety in Egypt, yes we can. Look for the Gitane Rocks line. A good entry-level bike is the Gitane Rocks 1.1 (2007 model), which can be had for around L.E. 3300.

    Should I buy a single-speed bike?

Single-speed bikes are still good bikes, and some people prefer the simplicity and low maintainence of single-speeders, BUT...if you get into any form of frequent/long trail riding, you're probably going to outgrow it fast...your knees will tell you :)

    Do I need disc brakes?

Yes and no. Disc brakes on a mountain bike are meant to shift the braking surface from the rim, where wet trail conditions can negatively impact braking power, to the disc mounted to the wheel hub.

In Egypt, where conditions are mostly dry, you will get by fine on rim brakes. However, disc brakes are becoming increasingly mainstream on mountain bikes, and you should get them if you can afford them for the sake of a more powerful and reliable brake system.

My back hurts bad after a long ride, is that normal?

That is most probably because you have an incorrect seat height. To set seat height correctly, your legs should be only slightly angled at the bottom of the crank movement (when pedal at its lowest point). bear in mind that sometimes you will need to change with seat height to suit the nature of the terrain being ridden. Steep downhills require a lower saddle, for instance.
