Hi, First off, great website with lots of good info. You've apparently put a lot of effort into it. Keep it up Hani.

Just got a decent second hand mountain bike and plan to use it in the city as well as off-road. I need advise on where to locally buy some spares and the carry on kit. Any help is appreciated.
*Helmet: I know Besceletta has them but is there any place else?
*Hydro pack: or a back pack with an integrated one
    *Behind the saddle tools bag.
*Bar mounted small battery powered light
    *Good chains
    *Bike specific multi-tool

Thanks
Hello and welcome to the MTB Egypt forums!

Here is some advice on where to get your riding kit:

*Helmet: I know Besceletta has them but is there any place else?

I found the ones at Besceletta to be very uncomfortable and provide zero ventilation in hot weather, but a helmet is a helmet: protection is the main function.

*Hydro pack: or a back pack with an integrated one

Havent's seen one sold in Egypt, but a good (temporary) option which will be less convenient than a hydration pack is frame mounted bottle cages. Abu EL Gokh on El Gomhorya st. in downtown sells cheap bottle cages (check your frame for mounts)

*Behind the saddle tools bag.
Again, haven't seen one sold anywhere in Egypt. However, one of my buddies had 3 custom made rack mounted bags for bike trekking in El Khayammeya at L.E. 20 a piece! They looked and worked great actually. I am sure you can talk someone over there into making you a basic smaller, nice looking saddle bag.

Alternative: Just but your stuff in a small backpack.

*Bar mounted small battery powered light

I think Abu EL Gokh carries some low-quality Chinese made ones. Measly light output though. Try checking the Industrial Safety stores on El Goumhoreya st for the rechargeable lights (smaller ones). You can pick up a nice rechargable LED light for L.E. 70-100. Next step is to jimmy-rig a handlebar mount for it, which isn't as difficult as it sounds.

P.S. I have the Blackburn System X4. Great bike light!

*Good chains

Goumhorya st hardware stors or any hardware store for that matter. Get yourself a nice chain and a padlock for less than L.E. 25! Wrap duct tape around the chain so that you would not scratch your frame.

*Bike specific multi-tool
Get an allen key set (L.E. 15-30 at any hardware store) and two small screwdrivers (a flathead and a philips)
Abu El Gokh has spare tubes. Get the more expensive ones.

Good luck and happy riding!
Hani , thanks for the great info

I actually meant the driving chains... Smile any recommendation on that?

Ah Smile

Never bought a chain in Egypt. I would assume Abu El Goukh would have limited selection of low quality 8 and 9 speed chains. Not sure though.
