Two-week intensive mountain biking training programme for beginners

The course is a response to the growing number of people interested in the sport of mountain biking in Egypt. There are no prerequisites aside from knowing how to ride a bike. If you currently don’t have your own bike and gear, we can offer rentals for the two practical sessions.

The course will be limited to a small number of participants and will be structured as follows:
 
1- Two fully-guided riding skills sessions (strictly limited to course participants). These sessions will include ON THE TRAIL coaching on:
  1. Bike handling basics: Basic body position, weight distribution and the attack position.
  2. Riding singletrack and technical features
  3. Basic trail navigation skills
2- Two 1-hour online workshops focused on key relevant topics. Topics include: navigation skills, reading trail difficulty systems, using Trailforks, bike geometry, buying new or used bikes, how to put together an essential toolset, history and types of mountain biking etc)
 
3- A 15-minute 1-on-1 online coaching session for each participant to use with the course facilitator on any questions they might have on any relevant topic (gear selection, bike selection and bike shopping, bike geometry, bike fit, mechanical problems, navigation skills, technical advice, etc)
 
4- Participants will receive a certificate of completion from MTB Egypt.

What will I learn in this course?

The course is designed to introduce participants to the  fundamentals of mountain biking/off-road bicycle riding in  a fun and safe learning environment. You’ll learn about:

  • Fundamentals of off-road riding skills (balancing on uneven terrain, weight shifts, climbing, descending, cornering, applying power to the pedals efficiently, etc)
  • History, types and styles of  mountain biking/off-road cycling.
  • How to choose a suitable bike
  • How to put together an essential gear kit
  • The essentials of outdoor safety and awareness
  • The fundamentals of mountain biking skills
  • How to build a baseline fitness level you need to build  to enjoy mountain biking
  • What is “trail etiquette” and considerations  for using your bike on public multi-use trails
  • How to navigate trail networks
  • How to do essential trail repairs on your bike
  • How to lead a group ride
  • …and much more!

All in all, this will be more than 6 hours of training (two rides, two workshops and one 1-on-1 session) on how to start mountain biking in a way that is safe, enjoyable and will accelerate your learning curve. It will also enable you to meet other like-minded people and start to get to know the growing Egyptian mountain biking community.

about the course facilitators

 
Your course facilitators will be the core team of MTB Egypt with more than 20 years of experience in mountain biking. MTB Egypt has introduced the first ever amateur mountain biking race series to Egypt, established the Egyptian Mountain Biking Commision, co-organized the first ever African Continental Mountain Biking Championships in Egypt as well as mentored many Egyptian amateur and competitive riders. Our team members have been a part of riding, coaching and trail building communities in Egypt and beyond many years.

Frequently asked questions

what is the participation fee?

The course participation fee is EGP 1000/person. To reserve a spot in the course and to minimize cash transactions during the COVID-19 crisis, we ask for payment via bank deposit (preferred) or credit card (+3% processing fee) to secure your place in the course. We will keep the number of participants as small as possible in order to be able to have an effective (and fun!) learning environment. Accordingly, final confirmation of participation will be sent immediately after payment of the course fee.

What if I don't have a suitable bike?

No problem. MTB Egypt can provide rentals of high quality, reliable mountain bike for the practical sessions of the course.

When is the next course

The August 2020 course is scheduled as follows (subject to change):

1- Tuesday September 1st 8-9pm (1st online session)
2- Saturday September 5th 7-9am (1st practical skills session)
3- Tuesday September 8th 8-9pm (2nd online session)
4- Saturday September 12th 7-9am (2nd practical skills session)
